Tint appearance is approximate. Actual darkness varies based on factory glass, interior color, lighting conditions, film type and viewing angle. Tint laws vary by location; we confirm legal shades at the shop.

Illinois Tint FAQ

Current as of our last review; verify with the Illinois statute before relying on it.

What is the legal window tint limit in Illinois?

Under 625 ILCS 5/12-503, sedans, coupes and wagons must keep at least 35% visible light transmission (VLT) on the front side windows, back side windows and rear window. SUVs, crossovers, vans and pickups must keep at least 50% on the front side windows, and may run any darkness on the back side windows and rear window. The windshield may only have non-reflective film on the top 6 inches.

Is 20% tint legal in Illinois?

Not on the front side windows of any vehicle. On a sedan, 20% is also too dark for the rear side windows and rear glass, which need 35%. On an SUV, van or truck, 20% (or darker) is allowed behind the driver because Illinois has no minimum for those windows.

Does Illinois measure the film or the whole window?

The whole window. The law measures net VLT: the film and the factory glass combined. Most factory side glass passes roughly 70 to 80% of light, so a 35% film on 75% glass measures about 26% net, which fails a sedan's 35% rule. That is why we meter the glass before recommending a shade.
